Welcome to the Innovation and Enterprise Research Laboratory

The Innovation and Enterprise Research Laboratory was established in 2002 and now is a part of the Centre for Quantum Computing and Intelligent Systems at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Our primary objective is to understand the process of innovation and the role of information technology and the law in the adoption of innovative and entrepreneurial practice.

  • Wei Liu, PhD 2003 Topic: Agent-Oriented Belief Revision. Wei's thesis was outstanding and nominated for Best Australian Dissertation - each University can nominate one student dissertation. Wei teaches and conducts research at the University of Western Australia.
  • Suku Sinnappan, PhD 2004 Topic: Brand Personality and Conceptual Spaces. Suku produced an excellent thesis that explored Self-Concept in Brand Personality. He is now Senior Lecturer and Head of Information Systems at Swinbourne University.
  • Numi Tran, PhD 2005 Topic: Agent-Oriented Software Methodologies. Numi now working for IBM in Business Intelligence. Numi was awarded First Class Honours and a University Medal 2002.
  • Xun Wang, Master of Information Technology 2006 Topic: Python on an AIBO robot. Xun is now working towards his PhD.
  • Christopher Stanton, PhD 2008 Topic: Software Methodologies.
  • Muhammad Anshar, Master of Science 2009 Topic: Robotics. Anshar came to Australia on a scholarship awarded from special fund set up by the Australian Federal Government after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Anshar has returned to his Indonesian university where he teaches and conducts robotics research.

  • IBM Fellow aims for a practical goal in risk management
  • IBM PhD Fellowship awarded to Mr Xun Wang (only one awarded in Australia).
  • Best Genernal Artificial Intelligence Idea Prize for 2010 awarded to Mr Ben Johnson bythe 2010 Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Switzerland for presentation of the most creative, innovative, interesting and scientifically plausible idea for achieving artificial general intelligence.
  • Ms Wei Wang won the UTS & UniQuest Trailblazer Competition for 2010 for her entry, "Electronic vaccination management for developing nations".
  • Mr Rony Novianto won the UTS FEIT Research & Development Office 3 Minute Thesis Competition for his ASMO architecture for developing self-modifying robots.

  • Do Lawyers Dream of Electric Sheep: TWiL TV This Week in the Law: Episode 69. We got started at 4am after a long and arduous night in Sydney; TWiL is live Internet TV and based in California.
  • 2010 Retracing Charles Darwin's Beagle Voyage Charles Darwin's Great Great Granddaughter, Sarah Darwin, spent a whole day in the Magic Lab with an International Film crew interviewing students, post-docs and robots for a program on Evolution and Technology. She is sailing around the world with a film crew to celebrate Charles Darwin's 200th birth year, and the 150th anniversary of his publication of "On the Origin of Species". Our robots were featured on European TV during the episode on Robotics (from 8mins). Also appearing was Daniel Dennett.
  • Invited to the First International Robot Soccer Exhibition, China Science Week in Suzhou featured on Chinese CCTV to a massive audience.

  • John McCarthy, Stanford University, USA: John McCarthy is Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. He has been interested in artificial intelligence since 1948 and coined the term in 1955. His main artificial intelligence research area has been the formalization of common sense knowledge. He invented the LISP programming language in 1958, developed the concept of time-sharing in the late fifties and early sixties, and has worked on proving that computer programs meet their specifications since the early sixties. He invented the circumscription method of non-monotonic reasoning in 1978. His main research in recent times is formalizing common sense knowledge and reasoning. McCarthy received the A. M. Turing award of the Association for Computing Machinery in 1971 and was elected President of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence for 1983-84 and is a Fellow of that organization. He received the first Research Excellence Award of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in 1985, the Kyoto Prize of the Inamori Foundation in November 1988, and the National Medal of Science in 1990. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. He has received honorary degreees from Linkoping University in Sweden, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Colby College, Trinity College, Dublin and Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He has been declared a Distinguished Alumnus by the California Institute of Technology.


  • Grigoris Antoniou, University of Crete: Greece. Grigoris is a Professor of Computer Science Institute of Computer Science Foundation for Research and Technology. He works in the area of knowledge representation and recently completed a book on the Semantic Web which will be published by MIT Press in 2004.
  • David Makinson, Kings College London, UK: Professor David Clement Makinson is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, King's College, London and a member of its Group of Logic, Language and Computation. David invented the area of Belief Revision with Peter Gärdenfors and Carlos Alchourron, and contributed seminal work to the area of nonmonotonic reasoning.
  • Bernhard Nebel, University of Freiburg: GermanyBernhard is Professor at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and head of the research group on foundations of AI. He is a member of the IJCAI Inc board of trustees, and a member of the graduate school on Mathematical Logic and Its Applications, and used to be a member of the graduate school on Human and Machine Intelligence, which ended in March 2002. Among other professional services, he served as the Program Co-chair for the 3rd International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR'92), as the Program Co-chair for the 18th German Annual Conference on AI (KI'94), as the General Chair of the 21st German Annual Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI'97), and as the Program Chair for the 17th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI'01). In 2001, Bernhard Nebel was elected as an ECCAI fellow.
  • Michael Thielscher, Dresden University of Technology: GermanyMichael is a Professor in Computational Logic at TU Dresden. He works in the area of Cognitive Robotics and developed FLUX, a high-level programming system for cognitive agents of all kinds, including autonomous robots.
  • Bruce Bargmeyer, University of California, Berkley USA: Bruce is Chair of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 32 and a member of the WC3 Advisory Committee. Conference Chair for the Open Forum on Metadata Registries 2003.
  • John Salasin, DARPA, US: AJohn is Program Manager at DARPA for the Dynamic Assembly for System Adaptability, Dependability, and Assurance (DASADA) program. He has conducted information processing research for his entire professional career - on systems ranging in size from the encoder mechanism of a single cell in the Limulus (horseshoe crab) eye to the World Wide Military Command and Control (WWMCCS) system. His education includes a Ph.D. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Neurophysiology from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. in Zoology from George Washington University.
  • Peter Bruza, DSTO, Australia: Peter is a Senior Research Scientist at DSTC in Brisbane. Peter is active in the information retrieval community and we are working with him on Conceptual Spaces and Similarity Measures.
